Signs Your House Needs a Full Electrical Rewire
Electricity is something we take for granted until something goes wrong. If you live in an older property, an outdated electrical system isn't just inconvenient—it's a serious fire hazard.
Here’s how to tell if it’s time to call in an electrician for a full rewire:
1. Your Property is Over 25 Years Old
Wiring degrades over time. If your home hasn't been rewired in the last 25 to 30 years, it's highly likely that the wiring no longer meets modern safety standards (BS 7671) and may not handle the load of modern appliances.
2. Flickering or Dimming Lights
If your lights constantly flicker, dim when you plug in a high-power appliance (like a vacuum or microwave), or burn out quickly, it's a sign that your circuits are overloaded or there are loose connections.
3. Frequent Tripping of Circuit Breakers
Circuit breakers are designed to trip to protect you from overloads. However, if your consumer unit (fuse box) is constantly tripping, it means your system cannot handle the electrical demand.
4. Discolored or Warm Sockets
If your plug sockets feel warm to the touch, or you notice scorch marks or a slight burning smell, turn off the power at the mains immediately and call an emergency electrician. This is a severe fire risk.
5. Only One Socket Per Room
Older homes were built when we had far fewer electrical devices. If you rely heavily on extension leads and multi-plug adaptors, you are putting a dangerous strain on a single socket.
If you suspect your home needs rewiring, do not attempt to inspect it yourself. Post a job for a qualified, registered electrician today.
